What's better then a Greatest Hits compilation from bands like New Order, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths and The Bee Gees? Nothing is the right answer to my rhetorical question. Only 80's & 90's songs can reappear after twenty years and haunt your speakers like this song has been mine for the past five hours.
I heard tomorrow is the first day of Spring. My source is not so reliable, but for the first time in a long time, I just believed someone without googling it. Whether it's true or not, like most music gurus, I'm sharing with you a spring inspired playlist. That just means these are songs that I like and it just happens to be spring. They don't necessarily evoke spring nostalgia. So download all of em, drag em from your desktop to your iTunes, and shake that Velveteen playlist. Best believe this is un good look.
I just remembered my karaoke dream last night. If you ever catch me doing Karaoke, I am exclusive to hip hop and R&B. I'm not gonna pretend I can sing The Cure, New Order, or Billy Idol. Strictly gangsta. Anyway I sang this song in my dream last night, didn't do too bad. Either way this is a serious throwback that needs some attention.
Brother Sister duo Angus & Julia Stone have been a staple in my playlists since I discovered them on a Hotel Costes compilation album way back when. This remix of their track Big Jet Plane is three and a half minutes of time travel and it's basically amazing. Oh, and they kill it every time.

Two Door Cinema Club recently hit the studio at Daytrotter and there's really nothing better than four new Daytrotter recordings of any band that passes through there. I've always encouraged my readers to log on and get a free membership to download anything they put out. It's all brilliant pretty much. Here's two tracks from the session. Enjoy.

Friends Electric is a quartet in their early 20's hailing from as about far away from London nightclubs as one could possibly live. They formed at the age of 14 and this is them covering Adele's Someone Like You, easily her most moving track off the new record.

I recently rekindled my love affair with Netflix. You know how it goes. Same DVD sits there for months. Fortunately, I overcame the slump last week and since I've been watching the shit out of my queue. Obviously only discreet horror films and gross documentaries allowed. Nothing better than shazamming your TV at 2 am from bed. Hope you like it.
I'm just anotha sucka for acoustic especially when Ellie Goulding is involved. She's performing at Webster Hall 9 days from today and if you don't have tickets, start stalking craigslist. She's a UK import, a velveteen hall of famer, and that should suffice for you to hit download on this post and open a new tab for a craigslist search.

It's been a while since I've posted a foreign track and I feel it's unforgivable. Download this one and you'll see why. It's pretty mind blowing. Makes me wanna solve crime and chain smoke on a cobblestone street in Paris. Just sayin..
If I invented a new music genre, this would be it's theme song. Drake's vocals paired with Peter Bjorn & John's track is pretty amazing. Maybe Drake is just the man and the genre would fall short. Maybe it would work. But I would be picky. And I'd call this genre Hip-Pop.

Another weekend down and nothing to show for it. My beard is longer, my floors are sticky from the party I hosted Saturday night, and a little Monday morning Jamiroquai is in order. I'll try and post every day this week. The new blog is in the works and should be live any day now. Literally, any day. Tomorrow, next week. Maybe April 1st? Just kidding. It'll pop up soon.
It's tough managing a blog, an iPhone, an iTouch, and my life not to mention. Because of these colliding forces, sometimes, very rarely, do I come across a song of which it's origins I am totally unaware. In this case, it's Maroon 5. However this version is simply Adam Levine, at his finest. For all you Bieber fans, this is as close as the velveteen gets to pop music. Not making excuses, but listen and you'll see. P.s. for some reason it sounds so much better on headphones vs computer speakers. Put it in your ear!!!
The Velveteen is where I share with you my profound love for music. I encourage you to support the artists I preview. These tracks are posted for evaluation and sampling purposes only. Downloading any of these songs may be an infringement of copyrights. This project promotes the purchase of any song, album or merchandise for your personal use.
